07 Degrees of Fire

The connections between our cover stars continue to multiply—without us even meaning for it to happen. Here’s a peek at how these creative masters have crossed paths.

Fred + Wayne
Aside from Fred’s initial Wayne shoutout in our first issue (“I look at Wayne Coyne and go, ‘that’s the way to live.’”), the pair have collaborated a few times over the years. In 2008, Fred played a role in the Flaming Lips’ film Christmas on Mars, and in 2014, Funny or Die brought them together again to depict what would happen if Fred replaced Wayne as the lead singer of the Lips.

Wayne + Professor Blastoff
At the conclusion of the first-ever episode of the Professor Blastoff podcast, the gang played The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” to close the show.

Professor Blastoff (Tig) + Rachel + Jack
Several years ago, Rachel collaborated with Jack’s band fun. to found The Ally Coalition (TAC), supporting LGBTQ equality in the fashion, music and entertainment industries. Recently, Tig hosted an event presented by TAC and MBM Entertainment at the Grammy Museum.

Jack + Joy
Both of these musical masterminds have written for the pop mega-star Taylor Swift, with Joy contributing to Grammy-winning “Safe and Sound” (from the Hunger Games soundtrack), and Jack co-writing and co-producing songs off T. Swift’s most recent album, including “Out of the Woods,” “I Wish You Would” and “You Are In Love.”

Joy + Vanessa
These two talented women share a birthday, only one year apart—November 14.

Vanessa + Fred
These fellow SNL alum have shared the screen many times on the sketch-comedy show, as well as on Fred’s Portlandia.

Fred + Lance
Fred’s Portlandia brings these creatives together. Aside from Lance producing the behind-the-scenes documentary “Inside Portlandia,” Lance’s wife Corin Tucker and Portlandia co-creator Carrie Brownstein play together in the band Sleater-Kinney.

Wayne + Vanessa
Miley Cyrus is the glue that binds these two: Wayne has collaborated with the ever-changing entertainer several times, including on her most recent album, “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,” while Vanessa used her Hannah Montana-era Miley impression to audition for SNL.

Vanessa + Jack (+ Jonah)
Vanessa stars in the internet series “Sound Advice with Janessa Slater” (co-created by brother and Fire Theft contributor Jonah), offering advice to famous musicians, like Jack and his band fun.

BONUS! Vanessa + Jonah
Obviously these siblings have some creative history, but we couldn’t pass up sharing this clip of Vanessa roasting Jonah’s band, the United Nations.
