04 Uplifting Life

With a voice that’s equal parts haunting and hypnotic, Joy has danced through genres as she continually discovers and evolves her voice. The one constant in her work is a subtle optimism that rings through her potent lyrics. Here is an abbreviated look at some of her work and the words that bring her message to life.

“Hide” (from her 2005 solo album Genesis)

“To anyone who’s ever made a big mistake / We’ve all been there, so don’t be ashamed / Come out, come out and join the rest of us / You’ve been alone for way too long”

“Charmed Life” (from her 2009 solo EP One Of Those Days)

“It’s plain to see what we got is color in a world of black and white / Don’t even let it fool ya, we got everything we need”

“Poison and Wine” (from The Civil Wars’ 2001 album Barton Hallow)

“Oh your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine / You think your dreams are the same as mine / Oh I don’t love you, but I always will”

“Dust to Dust” (from The Civil War’s self-titled 2013 album)
